In order to digitize your drawing, we need a line drawing of your design drawn in ink. We scan this into our computer program, trace the drawing with a drawing program, separate the drawing into layers, and cut a proof copy on 5 mil hazy polyester film. This will be sent to you for approval.

The quality of the line drawing determines the quality of the proof we send back. Here are some helpful hints.

1. Use a fine tip drawing pen to make your drawing. You might want to sketch your design in pencil first and then overlay a sheet of vellum and trace in ink. We will adjust out the inevitable wiggles but be sure all the shapes are completed. Gaps, no matter how small, are a problem.

2. The drawing should include all layers on the same sheet. This way we can reproduce a perfect no overlay stencil. The layer number should be indicated in blue pencil trying not to touch the inked lines. Or you can make a photo copy and indicate the layer numbers on the copy.

3. If the overall design is a repeating stencil, you need to show on the drawing how it repeats.

4. We add registration marks to align the layers and if possible, to use for the repeat alignment. If this is not possible we will use dotted lines of a obvious shape to be used for repeat alignment.

5. If your drawing has repeating shapes, you only need to draw the repeats accurately enough to show us how it repeats. This is true even if the repeats are repositioned or reversed. We can handle this duplication with our drawing program to ensure that the repeats are an exact duplicate. We can enlarge or reduce any drawing you send. In fact, it is easier for us if you keep the line drawing less than 8.5” x 14” and tell us the final size.

6. If the drawing has a center line please indicate that on the drawing. This is especially helpful on shapes that are a mirror image. We will only trace half and then make a mirror image of that shape.

7. We normally add a 1 inch margin around the stencil, add layer numbers in the upper left hand corner, include the stencil number in the bottom margin and use small triangles for registration marks. If you need something additional or different let us know.

8. Our cutting capacity is limited to 18 x 24 inches. With a 1 inch margin the practical limit to a stencil is 16 x 22 inches. Usually, larger stencils can be divided into two or more parts. (Many stencilers have told us that anything larger that 18’ x 24” is too difficult to handle on a ladder.)

9. Most of our stencils are cut on 5 mil hazy polyester (Mylar) which is the most economical. We also stock 5 ml polyester drafting film (matte on one side) and 7 mil blue polyester.

10. When you send in a drawing, we will advise you of the digitizing fee and the estimated cost (+/- 10%) to cut in order quantities of 12, 24, and 48. Terms are net 30 days.

11. In a pinch we can digitize from a stencil previously cut but this is not the best method.
